So, a lot of people have asked me why I've been MIA so much, so I thought I'd explain a bit.

It all comes down to my art. You see, during most of this past year I've grown more and more unhappy about what I draw, to the point my art drive pretty much died down. I wasn't happy with how I did things, more so when I looked at how my art used to be. But, I realized I had felt miserable about it for too long so I decided to change things and try to get back in track. For starters I began to take an art class, and the first time I was told was to -forget- about my shading style. That I was just doing things wrong and had to start from scratch, and so I did.

I think the change is noticeable, and hopefully I won't let my gallery go abandoned again. Also, for all the people who were concerned about me, thank you! You were a big part of why I decided to put my stuff together.

I never noticed anything wrong with your shading. Wtf?
DJ-angelus Featured By Owner Feb 14, 2014   Photographer
I would kill to be able to draw like you did.

And it infurates me that art teaches tend to do this.

Your art was awesome.  F*** what that teacher thinks.  I WISH I could draw like you.

Hmm...just finished enjoying your gallery, then observed the above message. Almost sounded like they were from 2 completely seperate people. I say this because judging by the artworks, you clearly had a passion for your style (its absolutely b e a u t i f u l btw) but looks like you've started to doubt it based on instructer's imput. 20billion years from now when youre 300 X better, they'll STILL tell you change this/that. At some point, for better or worse, ya just gotta look em in the eye and say I disagree. Yeah, know theres room for improvement always and some of the advice is worthwhile, but don't let it corrupt your way of things too much lol. That being said, your personal interpretation of the female form is VERY refreshing. The rich, warm coloring style brings it out all the more. Please keep it up.

Wait. What? How were you going it wrong? Your shading style always looked fine to me...

from MY point, your art was already good enough for my taste.

the only thing I would have liked to see done bout it would have been your part of our ARTTRADE.

(mine still wait for yours for around 2 years and a half now to show)

Finally, the forces of art justice got to work and showed this woman how wrong she was. And just like MANY out there, once they are told they must learn, they back off. This is something which drives arrogant people crazy. They already think they the best thing there is. And now, a person who is clearly far superior to them in skill, tell them they are not as good as they claim.

Learning, after people hits puberty is always like that. And endless loop of thinking you know it all, just to get told otherwise by someone smarter and more experienced than you.

Here's the catch, ignore the arrogant dumbassses. No, not the instructors. Or the people with superior skills to you but lacking an internet account with a gazillion pageviews. They are the ones who can actually help you. Who you have to ignore are the people who kisses your ass online like it's covered on cocaine. And the people who brags about pageviews (because they join every group on sight and spend their time begging to get featured).

And here's the catch, I don't win anything from this reply. The only person who wins is JE (I heard her real name, but I will just pretend I never did). Because she's the one who can get the best from learning.

Oh, by the way, your drive is not what you lost. What happened is that you got off your cloud, and you feel ashamed and frustrated. I think depression is also around the corner. The only way to kick these guys off your ground to play by the rules. Not yours (those are the ones to put you where you are to begin with), but the general rules people with their feet on the ground, and brains all-right follow.

I'll pretend I never read ED's article, and that I hope she gets on the right path. May hard word brings you better luck.

I hope that you agree with the changes.  My biggest problem with art classes is that the instructor, who often is teaching because they can't hack it in the art world themselves, wants you to do something their way and not your way.  A certain style or technique isn't for everyone.  Of course this isn't intended to mean that all art teachers are like that.  Far from it.  But alas such people are more often the rule rather than the exception.

Also even where i live which is not the best there was a guy who did lessons for free bit he still was doing pro work and had gallery and all this good stuff going for him but wanted to give to the community.
NoblesseObliged Featured By Owner Dec 6, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
really every art teacher i have met had pro work on the side in my high school i had a teacher who had worked for Disney. In college all 3 of my teachers did work on the side also. One was a concept artist, he did comic covers and characters for marvel, things for magic the gathering and more. Then one was a functioning pottery artist and the other one did some sort of concept things also and another one there who i didn't meet but did work also. all were great artist and this was a public hs and a community college. Maybe you just ran into crappy people

always remember that technique and rules are so important to learn for sure, in music or art, but the trick is to forget all u learned afterwards, so it comes natural and  the creativity doesnt die!

I spent 2-3 years rebuilding my art, at the cost i cant shade as good as I draw now. I'm still trying to find a colouring and shading style that works for me.

Your biggest problem is you stuck to one thing for too long and people just got sick of it me included, your recent stuff however is the step in the right direction. You just need to expand out of your usual drawing style more.

Great to hear from you again. Sorry to hear about how you felt about your art during these times, but hopefully things will be more smooth sailing for now on.

Taking a class is cool, hope you learn lots. I miss seeing your beautiful girls here, and hope to see more soon. You never really got a head of steam going after that mess with 4chan a while back. It saddens me that they managed to stymie your interest in producing more art. I hope you find your muse again. Good luck. *hugs*

Believe me, Jessica, I think your artwork has always been really nice to check out, and the way you draw anthro characters is quite lovely as well. I've actually been a fan of your artwork ever since I first checked it out, and I feel like wanting to draw something for you to show my appreciation. I am currently accepting twelve Christmas-themed requests for my friends on dA, and I thought you might be interested to participate. The details can be featured in my journal entry here:

I've had the same problem with Barbi the Barbarienne.

Fans of the comic have asked if I've abandoned the strip when the simple truth is I want to focus on quality not quantity.

I've been spending the last year (or so) on "the Gath Chronicles" trying to may the art look more "professional".

Whereas Barbi has been done in a more "fast n loose" style; which I find kind of embarrassing to exhibit.

So, in a nutshell, I support you decision to focus more on the quality of your already beautiful artwork.
